Biography:
Josephine’s background was originally in social work where she worked both as a qualified practice teacher supervising trainee social workers and as a social work lecturer for a number of years at London Metropolitan University. Now specialising in patient safety, she was recently awarded a PhD entitled ‘Medical Harm and Patient empowerment: Some Critical Perspectives’.
Before joining PSSQ as a Research Associate she was project manager of the Patients for Patient Safety (PfPS) Project, a national scheme run by the charity Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) and funded by the National Patient Safety Agency. The two-year initiative was set up to develop strategies for achieving patient and public involvement in patient safety.
Josephine has been involved in a range of other patient safety activities, both as an activist and patient representative. She Chaired a Patient and Public Involvement Forum (PPIF) for a national specialist hospital trust and sat on the Information and Clinical Governance Subgroups of the Tackling Concerns Locally Working Group as a patient's representative. She is currently a member of the Reference Group for the National Evaluation Study into Patient and Public Involvement being carried out by the Healthcare Commission.
In 2007 Josephine was chosen to become a Patients for Patient Safety Champion, England, part of the WHO World Alliance for Patient Safety. She has subsequently spoken at a number of high profile patient safety conferences, shared a platform with the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, and been asked to give evidence to the current Health Committee on Patient Safety.
